Just as we had hoped – we have our first harvest of summer squash this week! It feels like its a few weeks behind our normal harvest, and that was to be expected given our loooong spring… But actually, looking back over our records, in the last 8 years there was a few when the summer squash harvest didn’t begin until the last week of July or even early August. What I can assure you is that we’re doing the very best we can, given we have no choice but to cooperate with Mother Nature. And she’s calling the shots!

Salad Mix8-10 different varieties of lettuce

Fennel, Perfection – Each week we try to have some kind of herb. In this case, fennel is both an herb and a vegetable that can be used as it’s own ingredient. Farmer Shari’s favorite recipe for fennel: With low heat, melt 1-2 tablespoons butter in skillet. (Optional: Use all or part oil instead of butter.) Cut fennel in half width-wise, then cut long slices from each half. Cook fennel low and slow, until slices start to get dark, toasty & crunchy. Try to restrain yourself from not eating the entire caramelized fennel out of the pan!

Carrots Nelson – Yay! Our first carrots!

Summer Squash Black Beauty, Golden, & White Bush are the main varieties we grow along with a few others. All summer squash can be used interchangeably-sautéed, stir-fried, with eggs, grated into salads.

Sugar Snap Peas Sugar Ann & Cascadia – The 4th – and probably last – week of peas!

Windsor Broccoli (Farm & Parkrose pick up ONLY).

Bunching or Pearl OnionsPacific Pearl & Purplette. These little onions are perfect for salads, garnish or pickling; not for storage. Pacific Pearl was developed here in Oregon. We’re trying them for the first time. Be sure to use the green tops as you would scallions.

Garlic Chesnok Red– This garlic has NOT been cured – it was just pulled from the ground and given to you. That simply means it will not store for very long and you should use it sooner rather than later. Use it in all the same ways you’d use regular (cured) garlic.
